A junior English willow bat from SS Sunridges, built to the Players specification with fibre tape reinforcement along the edges. It is a real willow bat scaled down rather than a toy — the same blade profile and pickup a club player would recognise, in a size a young batter can actually swing through the line.
Fibre tape matters at this level. Junior players middle the ball less often, and the edges take the punishment. The tape holds them together through a season of it.

Bat size follows the player's height, not their age. A tall ten-year-old and a short thirteen-year-old often need different bats to what their birthday suggests.

If the player is between sizes, take the smaller one. A bat that is too long forces the hands away from the body and the technique goes with it. Bring them into the store and we will check the pickup.
A new English willow bat is not ready to face a hard ball. The fibres in the blade have to be compressed first, or the surface cracks on the first proper shot. Done properly it takes six to eight hours of mallet work.
We do it in store for $150, usually inside two to three days. Add it above and the bat leaves ready to play. If you would rather do it yourself, oil the face lightly with raw linseed oil first, then work the mallet from the middle outward, spending most of the time on the edges and toe.
